I have just read your blog on BBC News regarding private corporations providing ad hoc intervention regarding malware and blocking potential spam servers etc.

Perhaps there is room for a not-for-profit organisation to provide a free cooperative service to which organisations such as Google could subscribe freely, in addition to their own activities.

In time, with enough organisations sharing their private block-lists with a not-for-profit, the service provided by the not-for-profit could become more useful than a privately operated list and produce more open net-governance available to all?

There is always the temptation for a journalist to spice up their story by adding the phrase "on the internet" to the end of the story. This has latterly be superseded by "on MySpace", "on YouTube" or "on Facebook" e.g.

* Schoolboys film fights on YouTube
* Woman organises party on MySpace - house ransacked
* Crime suspect's picture posted on Facebook

These stories become far less newsworthy if they were:
* Schoolboys film fights on Super 8
* Woman organises party on telephone - house ransacked
* Crime suspect's picture posted on lamppost

The PR helps to widen the appeal of MySpace/Facebook/YouTube/Internet, but it's really just a slow news day - rather like the "look at what's for sale on eBay" news stories that appear when real news is hard to find.
