<blockquote>Website design in those days wasn't very sophisticated. All our pages were simple HTML documents, and we generally assumed that site visitors used Netscape Navigator, the successful browser based on NCSA Mosaic, the first graphical web browser.</blockquote>
Bill sorry you have it back to front. The team that built Netscape was the same that created Mosaic, but no code from mosaic was in Netscape. This was partly because NCSA would not licence the code, and at one point threatened copyright infringement case. But at the same time Microsoft managed to secure a licence agreement to use code from mosaic. And the need to do it right this time, from Marc Andressen. Netscape Navigator eventually became the basis for Firefox.

You can still see the credit to NCSA in the about window on Internet explorer. This is all covered in Jim Clarks book <a href="http://www.amazon.co.uk/s?search-alias=stripbooks&field-isbn=0312199341" rel="nofollow">Netscape Time</a>. A good read if you want to find out just how evil Microsoft was back then.

Hi Bill
I agree about Blazing Saddles being the best bike shop in cambridge for spares and repairs. My gears had become borderline dangerous. Blazing saddles did the job well, for a good price, on time and had to fit an new bottom bracket (spindle) which they didn't charge for because they had not quoted for it. Most would see it as an opportunity to charge more.
I would however recomend Cycle King in Mill road if you want to buy a new 'cheap' bike say up to £200. They buy up surplus stock and have a good range of the cheaper end of things.

It's not that schools don't see the potential of all this communications technology - it's the reality of how it is misused by a significant minority of young people. Not greatly different from how it's misused by older people, but if you're trying to run a school you can lose many hours each week trying to sort out all the problems it causes.

In the adult world people don't tend to involve their employer in all their SMS/Facebook/Bebo/IM/YouTube problems and expect them to sort out the mess. In schools they do and we do.

At this point people usually start to talk about acceptable use policies and educating young people about use of the technology. Alas, bullies don't care about this and unfortunately the technology is used daily by some people to make other people feel bad.

So the best solution is to to try to restrict use of the technology in school. No it's not ideal, but it's far better than the alternative.

Great piece, Bill.

I'm chair of governors at Impington Village College and I want to put socia media at the heart of learning - even dancing with the devil by letting students have access (moderated, admittedly) to Facebook and Twitter in school. How on earth else are we going to turn out rounded and effective citizens capable of palying their part at work and in the community?
